Playing for Your Audience

Theatre Lovett's Performance Training Course

About

Theatre Lovett’s ever popular performance training course returns to the National Theatre of Ireland.
This week-long, intensive practical course is led by Louis Lovett. It focuses on the state of readiness required to play for our audiences, both young and older. The course celebrates making others shine. We tackle the art of stage craft and how to embrace failure on the road to good theatre.

This course is suitable for adult practitioners of all levels interested in performance for audiences young and old.

Funded by The Arts Council and supported by The Abbey Theatre.

"The rigour, professionalism and experience shine through."

Course Content

Participants are led through a wide range of performance techniques :

  • Bridging the divide between the performer and the audience.
  • Our physical presence and how to arrive at a state of calm and openness to our audience.
  • How the actor’s focus can become the audience’s focus.
  • How to bring mischief into your play. Be BOLD in your play and how to FAIL with aplomb.
  • Chorus work. Moving and working as a team.
  • Gauging your audience’s level of excitement, fear, attention or boredom.
How? Why? What to do next?

During the week, Muireann Ahern of Theatre Lovett presents:

  • European models of theatre practice for young audiences.
  • Knowing our audience and age appropriate work.

The week culminates in a live theatre experience presenting before an audience of young people.
