Playing for your Audience at The Abbey Theatre

This popular, week-long intensive course is led by Louis Lovett and introduces participants to performance techniques for audiences of all ages. Participants also have the opportunity to put these techniques into practice before an audience of young people in a theatre setting.

This course is suitable for adult practitioners of all levels and genres interested in performance for audiences young and old.

Course Content

Participants are led through a wide range of performance techniques :

  • Bridging the divide between the performer and the audience.
  • Our physical presence and how to arrive at a state of calm and openness to our audience.
  • How the actor’s focus can become the audience’s focus.
  • How to bring mischief into your play. Be BOLD in your play and how to FAIL with aplomb.
  • Chorus work. Moving and working as a team.
  • Gauging your audience’s level of excitement, fear, attention or boredom.
    How? Why? What to do next?

During the week, Muireann Ahern of Theatre Lovett presents:

  • European models of theatre practice for young audiences.
  • Knowing our audience and age appropriate work.

The week culminates in a live theatre experience presenting before an audience of young people in the theatre auditorium.

The Playing for Your Audience performance training course is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and over the past decade,  has taken place place in Dublin, at The Gate Theatre and at The Abbey Theatre and earlier in 2023 at The Theatre Royal, Waterford. 

We are actively looking to bring Playing for Your Audience to other Irish cities and abroad. We will take all expressed interest into consideration and we will work with local venues to explore the possibility of bringing the course somewhere close to you.
