Playing for your Audience

Returning soon!
To hear about future dates please join our mailing list or email info@theatrelovett.com

This popular week-long intensive practical course is led by Louis Lovett and introduces participants to techniques of performance addressed to audiences of all ages. Having been introduced to various Theatre Lovett techniques during the week, participants also have the opportunity to put these techniques into practice before an audience of children and young people in a theatre setting; this allows us to witness the technique in practice both by watching and doing. Participants and children share the live theatre experience. This exploration of audience engagement is an enjoyable and satisfying way to end the week.

This course is suitable for aspiring or established adult practitioners of all levels in Ireland and abroad; actors, dancers, movement practitioners, choreographers et al. International participants are welcomed and we are happy to advise on logistics and accommodation.
If you are looking for a performance school workshop, please contact info@theatrelovett.com

If you have participated in the course previously, you might want to visit Playing for your Audience Advanced for more information on our advanced level course.

Course Content

Louis Lovett will lead the participants through a wide range of performance techniques through play and improvisation, exploring, among others, the subjects below;

  • Bridging the divide between the performer and the audience.
  • Our physical presence and how to arrive at a state of calm and openness to our audience.
  • How the actor’s focus can become the audience’s focus.
  • How to bring mischief into your play. Be BOLD in your play and how to FAIL with aplomb.
  • Chorus work. Moving and working as a team.
  • Gauging your audience’s level of excitement, fear, attention or boredom. How? Why? What to do next?

Midway through the week, Muireann Ahern will introduce an afternoon presentation about;

  • Viewing European models of theatre practice for young audiences.
  • Knowing our audience and age appropriate work.

On the last day, the course culminates in an opportunity to apply some of the interrogated techniques performing in front of a young audience on a theatre stage.
